Australia sends youth ambassadors to work in Fiji Government departments

5:30 pm on 11 September 2003

As the row between Australia and Papua New Guinea over bureaucratic appointments deepens, young Australians have arrived in Fiji to work on official government placements.

Five of the seven youth ambassadors will work in government ministries, including the planning and justice departments.

The other two will be working for Fiji's cricket association and the Pacific Financial Technical Centre.

AusAID says the assignments aim to strengthen mutual understanding between Australians and the people of the Asia-Pacific region.

It says the placements will also contribute to development.

Australia's Youth Ambassadors programme for Fiji allows up to ten people to be recruited each year.
