Governor General election concerns in PNG referred to Supreme Court

4:37 pm on 29 September 2003

Papua New Guinea's Ombudsman Commission will refer a number of alleged irregularities arising from the election of the Governor-General to the Supreme Court.

The Post Courier reports that Chief Ombudsman Ila Geno says the commission has reached a point where it does not have the power to authoritatively determine the issues before it.

The Governor-General-elect, Sir Albert Kipalan, says he has nothing to hide and welcomes the involvement of the Supreme Court in the investigation.

Mr Geno says the Clerk of Parliament is refusing to hand over ballot papers relating to the election, saying that they are privilegegd documents.
