Drugs shipped to FSM island hit by flu outbreak

5:06 pm on 30 September 2003

A shipment of medicine is on its way to counter a flu epidemic that has already killed a child in the Federated States of Micronesia.

More than a hundred and sixty people on the island of Pollap in Chuuk State, out of a population of a thousand, are said to be suffering from the illness.

After hearing of the epidemic the Ayuda Foundation in Guam approached a number of businesses to fund relief supplies.

The medicine is being shipped to Weno, the main island of Chuuk state, from there it will be flown to another island and Pollap residents will have to journey by motorboat to pick up the supplies.
