Madang illegal settlers will be evicted after interim judgements quashed

The eviction of illegal settlers in Papua New Guinea's Madang province is to proceed after the provincial government obtained a judgement from the National Court.

The judgement quashes a number of interim judgements in favour of the settlers.

As many as ten thousand people could be affected by the decision, but provincial government officials say that number could be almost halved as about four thousand people had been identified as genuine settlers.

The eviction of illegal settlers was first planned for March this year but has been delayed by a series of legal moves by both sides.
