Solomon islands opposition claims corruption rife in government systems

A Solomon Islands opposition spokesman supports the call by MP, Yukio Sato, for more transparency and accountability in statutory bodies.

David Tuhanuku says public owned enterprises are set up to provide goods and services for people, but he says there are always allegations of misappropriation of funds.

"There is a high level of corruption in the Solomons government system and this does affect statutory bodies and state owned enterprises. And when you look at a situation where there is corruption, it is a situation where there is mismangement of finances, your looking at nepotism, you look at favouritism when it comes to staffing."

Mr Tuhanuku says he hopes RAMSI will extend its investigations into corruption in state owned enterprises.
