New Fiji sugar boss reportedly lacks industry experience

2:19 pm on 6 October 2003

It has been revealed that the man brought in to run the technically bankrupt Fiji Sugar Corporation is being paid almost 150-thousand US dollars a year but has no sugar industry experience.

Contract documents shown on Fiji TV say that John McFadden is also entitled to a range of benefits including performance bonuses of up to 62-thousand US dollars.

The general-secretary of the Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Association, Bala Dass, says the Sugar Corporation board must now answer to farmers why Mr McFadden was hired.

Mr Dass says under Mr McFadden's leadership, the company has deteriorated to a truly insolvent state, and its middle and senior managers have become arrogant towards farmers.

Documents show that Mr McFadden's previous experience was in mining and furniture companies as well as one which manufactured staples and adhesives.

Mr McFadden and board chairman Hafiz Khan are overseas and have been unavailable for comment.
