Fiji's biggest sugar industry union says revelations about their managing director's pay are a strong argument why they should get a pay increase.
Fiji TV says the call has been made by the Sugar and General Workers Union after documents were televised showing the remuneration package of the managing director of the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
They show the John McFadden is paid nearly 150-thousand US dollars plus a range of benefits, as well as performance bonuses of up to 62-thousand US dollars, although he had no previous experience in the sugar industry.
The union's general secretary, Felix Anthony, says while the managing director's pay has gone up by 300 percent the workers have not had a 3 percent rise.
Mr Anthony says Mr McFadden's appointment is scandalous considering he had no sugar industry experience and had produced a contradictory restructure plan for ailing industry.
He says it's high time the government, which is the majority shareholder in the sugar company, reviews Mr McFadden's position and appoints a local as the chief executive.
