A man has appeared in Suva magistrate's court for threatening to burn down the Fiji prime minister Laisenia Qarase's official residence.

The Daily Post reports that Jitoko Metui, who is 22, was arrested on Sunday as he walked down Richards Road outside the residence threatening to set it on fire.

Metui pleaded not guilty to a charge of being drunk and disorderly and has been released on bail.

A police spokesman, Mesake Koroi, has been quoted as saying they believe the man, who was from Matuku in Lau, was frustrated after Matuku lost to Moala in a rugby match.
