New Zealand troops who have returned from Solomon Islands, say the situation there is calmer, three months after forces went in to restore law and order.

74 soldiers and airforce personnel returned to the Ohakea Airbase last night after a tour as part of the Australian led regional assistance mission to the islands.

They say police in Solomon Islands have been doing a great job catching rebels and criminals.

But Squadron Leader Ron Thacker, from the Airforce's Three Squadron, says there is still a lot of aid work to do.

A replacement force of 79 people are already in Solomon Isalnds.
