Authorities in Apia are worried that criminal damage to road signs is compromising traffic safety.
The Transport Control Authority believes drunken youths are behind a series of attacks that have caused up to 25 thousand US dollars worth of damage in the past year.
The secretary of the board, Misi Tupuola, says road signs have been uprooted, defaced with spray paint and hammered with hard objects.
He says the signs are an important guide to traffic, particularly in rural areas, but the board has no money to replace the signs, which are imported from Australia.
