Officials in Indonesia estimate that 10 thousand people in Papua province are infected with the AIDS virus

The AIDS Prevention Commission believes that while there are only one thousand reported cases, infection rates are ten times higher.

Brother Teo Van de Broek from the Catholic Office for Justice and Peace in Jayapura believes that even those estimates are conservative.

"a lot of areas are not covered by medical examinations so there might be a lot of hidden cases around, we don't know exactly how many there are bit i feel that it is even higher than the figure that is now coming out."

Brother Van de Broek says the Government needs to do a lot more to raise public awareness about safe sex and the fatal virus.
