A government Senator in Fiji has warned against the new Family Law Bill which has just been passed, removing discrimination against women in many aspects of law.

Senator and former president of the Methodist Church, the Reverend Tomasi Kanailagi, said the bill should not be used to attack the traditional basis of family leadership and warned it would cause chaos in the social and traditional fabric of society.

He said in Fiji it is traditional that the man is the head of the household and that the women have a role that is supportive and subordinate to the male.
