Murdered Melanesian Brothers reburied in Solomon Islands

9:34 am on 25 October 2003

Six Melanesian Brothers killed in Solomon Islands earlier this year received a proper burial yesterday after their bodies had been exhumed by the Australian-led intervention police force.

Hudreds of people attended the funeral service and several thousand lined the streets of Honiara to pay their final respects to the Brothers before their remains were buried at Tabalia in northwest Guadalcanal.

The remains of a seventh Brother will be buried once his relatives arrive from Papua New Guinea.

All seven Brothers were murdered after travelling to the remote Weather Coast of Guadalcanal in an attempt to broker peace with Harold Keke's Guadalcanal Liberation Front.

A senior GLF commander is being held in custody on charges relating to their abduction and murder.
