Guam academic seeks regional education system

4:46 pm on 3 November 2003

The President of Guam University, Harold Allen, is travelling through the US associated islands in an effort to build a regional education system that can fill the workforce needs in the Western Pacific.

The fifty year old university has long been a destination for community college graduates from Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands.

But strong co-operation and partnerships between the community colleges and Guam have long been absent.

Mr Allen has met both educators and heads of state in his first two visits.

The university, the only four year institution in Micronesia, can tailor programmes to fill resourcing gaps and Mr Allan says he needs to know from the leaders where they need people.
