A French windsurfer has arrived in the French Polynesian capital, Papeete, three months after leaving Peru for her 8-thousand kilometres journey.

On arrival, Raphaela Le Gouvello said her solo crossing to Tahiti was long and difficult but she says she was encouraged along her trip west to complete the challenge.

Raphaela Le Gouvello was accompanied by a catamaran which helped her negotiate reefs once she was in French Polynesian waters.

She initially travelled the route chosen by the Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl who in 1947 sailed from Peru to the French Polynesian atoll of Raroia.

Raphaela Le Gouvello had earlier made a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.
