New Caledonia Greens leader quits

11:18 am on 6 November 2003

The secretary-general of New Caledonia's Greens has abandoned all his political posts after 30 years of activism.

Didier Baron says this also means that he will give up his campaign to be elected to the European parliament.

Mr Baron told the Nouvelles Caledoniennes newspaper that based on the Noumea accord he sought to find a common approach to environmental, economic and social issues.

But he says he has faced nothing but closed doors as all sides only want to preach to their own.

Mr Baron says little time is left to build New Caledonia and he says a counterweight needs to be found to the dominant ultraliberal plans.
