Fiji's treason convict, Josefa Nata, has filed an application to appeal against his life sentence on the grounds that his trail was unfair.

Nata and fellow coup accomplice, Timoci Silatolu, were sentenced to life imprisonment in June with Nata to serve a minimum term of seven years.

Nata and Silatolu were convicted of conspiring to overthrow the lawfully elected government, taking and detaining government members as hostages by force of arms and purporting to form an illegal administration.

Nata's application for leave to appeal raises constitutional issues and he claims that he was assaulted onboard a navy ship while being transported from Nukulau Island during his trial.

Justice Nazhat Shameem has adjourned hearing the application until January
