The police commander of Papua New Guinea's National Capital District, Geoffrey Vaki, has been suspended on full pay amid proceedings for contempt of court.

The National newspaper reports that the acting commissioner took the decision after Vaki had failed to bring his brother Philip Vaki to court to be sentenced over an armed robbery at the Nadzab Airport four years ago.

During the robbery, a guard was shot and the gang escaped with more than 150-thousand US dollars before being caught on Manus island.

Commander Vaki was his brother's guarantor while on bail but failed to present him to the court for sentencing.
