PNG court abandons case against Port Moresby police boss

The National Court in the Papua New Guinea city of Lae has dismissed contempt of court charges against suspended NCD/Central police commander, Geoffrey Vaki.

The court ruled that paying 300 US dollars and the forfeiture of the same amount in bail money was punishment enough on Mr Vaki.

The Lae Office of the Public Prosecutor filed contempt of court charges against Mr Vaki, alleging he failed to pay 300 dollars as ordered by the National Court in July after his brother Philip Vaki absconded bail.

Philip Vaki, who led an armed robbery in 1999, during which more 150-thousand US dollars was stolen, was granted bail after his elder brother commander Vaki offered to be a guarantor.
