PNG island to host Bougainville weapons disposal talks

8:28 am on 26 November 2003

The former combatants in the civil war on Papua New Guinea's Bougainville meet this week to decide what to do with the guns surrendered on the island.

As part of the peace plan, guns were to be removed in a three stage process - surrender, containment and then a final decision of what should be done with those stored weapons.

The weapon problem needs to be resolved before Bougainville can elect an autonomous government.

In July, the UN envoy, Noel Sinclaire, announced that he was satisfied with the guns in containment and that a decision needed to be made on what to do with the guns within four and a half months.

Australian political scientist, Ted Wolfers, who is working in an advisory capacity with the PNG Government, says the combatants will meet on Nissan Island this week to debate the matter.

"The government of course hopes that they will agree to destroy the weapons finally and so remove the threat from Bougainville but they are going to have to reconcile amongst themselves first, come back and talk to us and then we see where we take the process from there on."
