There are signs that China is beginning to withdraw from Kiribati, after the Government granted diplomatic recognition to Taiwan.

The news director at Radio Kiribati, Ross Terubea, says the station was notified on Tuesday by the Chinese Embassy that an announcement on it suspending relations was imminent.

Mr Terubea says that announcement is still to be formally made, but he says China has already dismantled its satellite tracking station.

"We also understand that they are also suspending their work on some of the major projects in the capital, South Tarawa, especially the port complex at Betio."

On Monday, hundreds of I-Kiribati drove to Parliament in protest at the Government's decision to recognize Taiwan.
