The mayor of Fiji's northern town of Labasa, Charan Jeath Singh, says the Australian budget airline, Virgin Blue, has shown interest in building a 10-million dollar US dollar international airport in Vanua Levu and flying there.

Mr Singh has told the Fiji Sun newspaper he has spoken with the chief executive of Virgin Blue who has shown interest in developing the tourist industry in the northern division.

He says Virgin Blue could make five flights a week from Australia and New Zealand and bring over 1200 tourists a week to the economically depressed north.
