Fiji Tourism Forum oppose Iraq deployment

12:10 pm on 3 December 2003

Stakeholders in Fiji's tourism industry believe that deployment of the country's soldiers in Iraq would threaten the industry.

The Fiji Times reports that the National Tourism Forum has asked the government not to deploy troops to Iraq for fear of retaliation through terrorist attacks which would severely dent Fiji's image as a tourist destination.

Qantas executive, Narendra Kumar, is quoted as saying that many tourist destinations are regarded as heightened security risks.

He says there is still the potential to capitalise on building Fiji's reputation as a safe peaceful and idyllic haven.

Mr Kumar says unforeseen acts of terrorism and war can have disastrous effects on tourism.
