Fiji mayor seeking millions in damages from Labour party

The mayor of Fiji's northern town of Labasa, Charan Jeath Singh, says he's seeking millions of dollars in damages from the Labour party over a defamatory election leaflet.

Charan Jeath Singh says the party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, has been spreading lies about him in a dirty tactics campaign to prevent him winning this weekend's by-election.

He is contesting the Labasa Rural Indian seat for the National Federation party.

Mr Singh says it's not the first time Mr Chaudhry and his party have employed these tactics but this time, the pamphlet shows it's from the Labour party offices.

"The leaflet clearly has the Labour party symbol and the words the Fiji Labour Party on the top of the leaflet itself. Besides that there is Mr Chaudhry's photo together with the local area candidate that is contesting against me, so it's clearly evident that this leaflet is out of the Labour party office."

Mr Singh says the leaflet, written in Hindi, claims he supported the coup and the military mutiny as well as preventing distribution of supplies following the cyclone earlier this year.

The mayor says he's confident of winning the by-election because people don't believe the lies.
