Children make up third of Nauru detainees

A new report says children now make up a third of the people being detained by Australian authorities in Nauru.

A report by a refugee advocates group, Just Australia, says an increase of five children last month means there are now ninety-three children in detention on Nauru.

284 are now detained on the island.

Just Australia says the children don't need to be locked up and it is severely damaging for them to be kept in detention any longer.

Australia's immigration minister Amanda Vanstone says all detainees on Nauru except three have been found not to be refugees, and all children could leave if their parents agreed to return home.
