Fiji police use snap roadblocks and checkpoints to curb crime wave

Fiji police plan to throw up snap roadblocks and checkpoints in an effort to contain a pre-Christmas crime wave.

It follows an increasing number of armed robberies including an incident in which a cane knife-weilding bank robber ran through the streets of Suva this week terrifying shoppers.

A police spokesman says the Strike Back team is on the ground ready to tackle problems on the spot.

But the opposition leader, Mick Beddoes, says police do not have enough resources and he has called on the ministry of home affairs to deploy some of the 3,500 soldiers who are under-utilised on the streets.

Mr Beddoes says the presence of uniformed soldiers among people will act as a strong deterrent.
