Customs dog sniffs out dope on American Samoa government employee

A customs dog has found marijuana in luggage belonging to an American Samoa government employee who was returning from an official trip to New Caledonia.

The 30-year old man was travelling via Apia on Polynesian Airlines on Saturday.

One of the two customs dogs sniffed out the suspect's bag even before it was put onto the conveyor.

Deputy Chief of Customs, Glenn Lefiti, says a search of the man's bag found about 8.7 grams of marijuana.

Police were called in and the man was held for questioning while in custody for 24 hours.

Mr Lefiti said the number of drug finds by the canine agents and their handlers show that the government has made a worthwhile investment in acquiring the dogs and training their handlers.
