Fiji's Stiveni Rabuka renews call for Grand Fijian Coalition

8:14 am on 5 January 2004

Fiji's former Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, is renewing calls for a grand Fijian coalition for the next general election.

Mr Rabuka says it is necessary for the unity of the Fijian community, which, he says, has been characterised by provincialism.

He is reported on the site, Fiji Live, as saying unity will also ensure Fijian rule.

The idea of a grand Fijian Coalition was put forward by Mr Rabuka ahead of the elections in 2001, but the ruling SDL party decided to go it alone carrying the flag for the Fijian community.
