12:58 pm on 6 January 2004

The proposed organic law containing increased autonomy for French Polynesia that the French Senate approved in December now goes before the French National Assembly on January the 13th.

French Polynesia's President, Gaston Flosse left for Paris over the weekend after meeting Tahiti's two National Assembly deputies to prepare for the debate.

Tahiti Presse says a French National Assembly Law Committee is due to study the text of the legilsation during the next week.

Tahiti's political opposition parties say the urgent process accorded the proposed revised statute is anti democratic.
