Tonga appears to escape serious cyclone damage

9:28 pm on 6 January 2004

The National Disaster Officer in Tonga, Male'u Takai, says the country has not suffered as much as their Pacific neighbours at the hands of Cyclone Heta.

Mr Takai says the main part of the cyclone seems to have passed the Niuatoputapu area in the north early this morning.

He says although American Samoa has declared a State of Emergency he does not expect the same thing to happen in Tonga.
