The French high commissioner to New Caledonia has ordered a review of this year's budget of the Loyalty Islands province.
This was decided after an examination showed that revenue and expenses did not match.
The territory's three provincial assemblies manage their own budgets but France may check them and call for amendments.
The review comes just four months before the elections.
