New Zealand considers artificial reef for Niue

The New Zealand government is investigating using a decommissioned Navy ship to create an artificial reef in Niue.

The coral reef off Niue was extensively damaged during Cyclone Heta.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now looking at the feasibility of scuttling a old New Zealand navy vessel, creating an artificial reef to attract tropical fish.

A spokesman for the Foreign Minister Phil Goff says the ministries of foreign affairs and defence will discuss the proposal and attempt to locate a suitable vessel.
