Cook Islands MP asks police to investigate Lyons

4:39 pm on 15 January 2004

The Cook Islands Prime Minister has asked his police force to investigate claims of sexual misconduct and drug use by the convicted New Zealander Mark Lyon.

The former Auckland property developer has been living in Rarotonga for more than six months and his residency on the island has aroused much controversy.

He was convicted on drugs, assault and weapons charges in a New Zealand court last year.

The Prime Minister Robert Woonton says a group of locals have made allegations of criminal behaviour by Lyon since he moved to the islands.

"There's some serious allegations being made and the matter has been referred to the police to investigate. I have advised my Crown Law and Immigration Departments to work together with the police on this issue."

Robert Woonton says he will not decide whether Lyon can stay on the island until the police have completed their inquiry.
