Air Pacific questions benefit for Fiji tourism of Virgin Blue

11:55 am on 23 January 2004

The managing director of the Fiji airline, Air Pacific, says the impending entry of the cut-price airline, Virgin Blue, won't necessarily be a good thing for the tourism industry.

John Campbell says that people flying low-fare airlines do not have much discretionary spending money, and will not benefit the economy.

The Chief Executive Officer of Hunts Travel in Suva, Sanjiv Bal, says he agrees with Mr Campbell.

"That's absolutely correct because they are mostly backpackers and that sort of crowd. And if we have people who are in low cost income bracket then we are not looking at the revenue which we want to look at."
