American Samoa cabs to get meters amid complaints by tourists

All taxi cabs in American Samoa will be required to have meters by July this year, under regulations currently being given final review by the Commerce Commission.

The commission's chairman, Ali'imau Scanlan, says implementing the new regulation has been part of their discussions for a long time.

Ali'imau says part of the new rules was the result of increasing complaints over taxi drivers overcharging, especially when cruise ships call into Pago Pago.

Last week, the Samoa News reported that complaints had been received by the Office of Tourism from tourists on a cruise ship.

He says the commission will not tolerate such illegal acts and any violations will be recommended for prosecution.
