Fire guts buildings in Solomons Islands capital

11:35 am on 29 January 2004

A major fire which erupted in the centre of the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara, last night has been brought under control.

The fire engulfed a popular Chinese restaurant before spreading to several buildings in a densely built up commercial area.

It also destroyed the office of the Australian-based special advisor to the prime minister, Robert Goh.

The fire service struggled to contain the blaze and an army helicopter of the regional assistance mission with a water dumping bucket was used to bring the fire under control.

There were no casualties or injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is not known and there have been no reports of the size of the damage.
