Fiji labour minister says proposed port strike is illegal

9:41 am on 6 February 2004

Fiji's labour minister, Kenneth Zinck, has warned port workers planning to go on strike next month that their action would be illegal.

Mr Zinck has told the Fiji Sun newspaper that as far as the law is concerned, there will be no strike by employees of the Maritime and Ports Authority of Fiji.

He says the port employees, who are members of the Fiji Public Service Association, have taken a strike ballot and given a strike notice wothout lodging a dispute.

Mr Zinck says after they have lodged a dispute they would have 42 days to solve the issue during which the strike notice would be null and void.

Port workers have planned a nationwide strike from March 8th over grievances which include concerns about uncertainty of employment as a result of ongoing reform processes under way since 2001.
