Solomons Government still to decide on Truth and Reconciliation Commission

The Solomon Islands Minister of National Reconciliation and Peace, Nathaniel Waena, is seeking advice from the United Nations before deciding whether to proceed with a Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Church and civil society groups have been promoting a South African style body to help heal divisions in the country caused by the years of ethnic conflict.

In July last year the Government announced it would set up such a body, but it is still to give it the green light.

Nathaniel Waena says he intends drawing on the UNDP's experience so he can make an informed decision on the value of the Commission.

He says the initial advice from a UNDP official is that he should be cautious.

"there is already a National Peace Council registering an amount of work in collaboration with RAMSI operations, therefore I am still waiting upon UNDP for advice from specialist knowledge throughout the UN organisation"
