Samoa by-election on March 19th

12:33 pm on 3 March 2004

A by-lection is set for March 19th in Samoa's Fa'asaleleaga Number One constitutuency following the death of Cabinet Minister Seumanu Aita Ah Wa.

It is one of the bigger constituencies on Savaii.

The deadline for nominations is this Friday March 5th.

The search for a new MP is expected to generate interest in how the candidates endorsed by the two main political parties fare.

Fa'asaleleaga Number One is the constituency that the late Prime Minister Tofilau Eti Alesana held and voters have always leaned towards the ruling Human Rights Protection Party.

But a member of the recently merged opposition Samoa Democratic Party, Tofilau Tauvaga, currently holds the other seat in the constituency.
