Ramsi welcomes return of local traditional justice system in Solomon Islands

2:31 pm on 8 March 2004

The head of the regional assistance mission to Solomon Islands, Nick Warner, says he supports the re-emergence of a chiefly system of justice at the local level.

Mr Warner says traditional systems broke down in places during the ethnic conflict.

He says as peace has been restored to the Solomons, chiefs in places such as the Weather Coast and parts of Malaita have begun looking to reassert their authority.

"And I think that is very good, strong development because what it means is that a local level, at a village level, when it comes to minor crimes, justice can be enacted quickly and properly and in a way that is very well understood and acceptable to a local community."
