Fiji police are reported to be on the verge of arresting seven people for plotting to kidnap and kill the prime minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, at the time of the May 2000 coup.

Fiji TV reports that the seven include a prominent chief, two former government ministers and senior police officers.

The seven were allegedly associated with the coup front man, George Speight.

The TV report says exactly when the seven planned to kidnap and kill Mr Chaudhry has been at the heart of the police investigations.

It says the investigation files have gone to the office of the director of public prosecutions and police are awaiting instructions to begin making arrests.
