Police in Fiji are denying that they're on the verge of arresting seven people linked to a plot to kidnap and kill the former prime minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, during the last coup.
Police spokesperson, Mesake Koroi, says Fiji TV may have got the story out of context because the police file remains open and insufficient evidence has been gathered at this point, to arrest anyone.
He says the police had sent the file, which is one of seven still open on the coup, to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, but it was returned with the comment that further evidence was required.
"There are about seven people - a chief and former parliamentarians, which are still under investigations but as to whether they are going to be charged or not, is another story. It is going to take a bit more time because the CID people are still trying to gather enough information."
Mesake Koroi says once the police believe they have sufficient evidence, the file will be sent back to the DPP's office which makes the decision on whether prosecutions can go ahead.
