Plane problem delays French Pacific summit

A summit of leaders from French Pacific territories is due to get underway early this week after being delayed by a cancelled flight.

The leaders are meeting to discuss the South Pacific Economic Cooperation, Social and Cultural Fund.

The operation of the fund was reviewed during the visit to Tahiti last year of the French President, Jacques Chirac.

He said he wanted to increase the French grant to the fund, taking it from just over three million US dollars to just over five million.

The delegations from New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna had been due in French Polynesia on Saturday, but a technical problem meant the Airbus could not be used.

Tahitipresse says a replacement flight was due to get the delegations to French Polynesia today or tomorrow.
