New Caledonia's phone provider, OPT, says it now has 100,000 subscribers of mobile phone services.

According to a report in the territory's Nouvelles Caledoniennes, OPT says the growth of mobile phones has exceeded expectations since the launch of the service in 1995.

Original projections were for about 5-thousand subscribers in three years but that figure was reached within the first year.

OPT says 85 percent of the public has access to its network.

New Caledonia has 45-thousand fixed line phone connections which still provide two thirds of OPT's business.
