The former Fiji Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, says it is the Labour Party which holds the key to amendments of entrenched legislation such as current land bills.
Mr Rabuka has told the Fiji Sun newspaper that the SDL government's bid to fulfill its election promise to abolish the Agricultural Landlord and Tenant Act, ALTA, would be futile.
He says the Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, should change his tune and work closely with Mahendra Chaudhry if he wishes to fulfill what he promised indigenous Fijians in 2001.
Mr Rabuka says the proposed bills to change land laws can only be passed with the support of the Labour Party.
Mr Rabuka says the SDL government should have a cordial working relationship with the Labour Party after being elected to power, especially as their win was only by a minimal majority.
Entrenched legislation such as land laws and the constitution of Fiji can only be amended with a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives which the government does not have.
