Fiji police consider whether to bring treason charges against four prominent leaders

7:25 am on 6 April 2004

Fiji police are considering what charges to lay against four prominent people responsible for the removal of the former president, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, during the May 2000 coup.

Radio Fiji reports that the four may face treason but police are also looking at other likely charges.

Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara stepped down as president after a visit by the four on board a naval vessel in Suva harbour where he had been advised to seek shelter from George Speight's rebels.

A military regime put in place after the president's departure took over executive authority while the Chaudhry government was held hostage in parliament.
