Runway lighting at Pago Pago in American Samoa delays flight landings

11:29 am on 6 April 2004

An Aloha Airlines flight from Rarotonga had to circle American Samoa's International Airport for some time over the weekend because the runway was in darkness.

The lights are normally activated from within the aircraft, but there appears to be a problem.

Last week, a Polynesian Twin Otter Plane had to return to Apia without landing because the runway lights were not on.

Over the weekend, a resident made an emergency call after he saw the jet approach for landing while the run- way at Pago Pago airport was still in darkness.

The lights finally came on as the aircraft came into land for a fourth time.
