Samoan opposition welcomes SamoaTel audit

11:24 am on 9 April 2004

Samoa's opposition leader says he's pleased the Controller and Chief Auditor is to conduct an audit of the postal services and telephone provider, SamoaTel.

Le Mamea Ropati said it should have been done long ago.

The Communications Minister, Palusalue Fa'apo II announced news of the audit on Monday following public unease after the corporation CEO Mark Yeoman was placed on leave while being investigated for alleged financial misappropriation.

Although an audit carried out by a private firm cleared Mr Yeoman, it did uncover financial discrepancies and a power struggle for control among senior managers, all of whom were expatriates.
