The former general secretary of theSolomon Islands National Teachers Association, Fred Taika, has died in Honiara from pneumonia.
Solomon Islands radio reports that he was admitted to the National Referral hospital last week, but his condition deteriorated yesterday.
Mr Taika was suspended as SINTA's general secretary last month.
He had been working to ensure teachers were paid on time, often resulting in strike action by members negotiating for better employment conditions.
His body is now with relatives in Honiara for people to pay their last respects.
