A herd of 40 Fiji-bred sheep known as Fiji Fantastic will be exported to Samoa this week for breeding.
The sheep have been cross-bred in Fiji for the last 24 years and adapted to tropical conditions at a cost of more than 6 million US dollars.
A senior agriculture ministry spokesman, Dr Joeli Vakabua, has told the Fiji Times the shipment will assist Pacific Island countries with breeding stock.
A Samoa agriculture ministry official, Laumata Pelesa, is quoted as saying the whole of Samoa has been waiting for this shipment to start a local herd.
Despite the breeding success, Fiji still imports 99 per cent of its lamb and mutton from New Zealand.
